  第三篇     A Thirsty World

The world is not only hungry,it is also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you, since nearly 75% of the earth's surface is covered with water. But about 97% of this huge amount is sea-water,or salt water.Man can only drink and use the other 3% -the fresh water that comes from rives, lakes, underground, and other sources. And we cannot even use all of that, because some of it is in the form of icebergs(冰山)and glaciers(冰山).Even worse, some of it has been polluted.

At the moment, this small amount of fresh water is still enough for us . However, our for water is increasing rapidly.Only if we take steps to deal with this problem now can we avoid a severe worldwide water shonage 1ateron.A limited water supply would have a bad effect on agriculture and industry.

In addition to stopping wasting our precious water, one useful step we should dtake is to develop ways of reusing it.Experiments have already been done in this field ,but donly on a small scale.

Today,in most large cities, water is used only once and it  eventually returns to the sea or runs into underground storage tanks,But it is possible to pipe water that has been used to a purifying(净化)plant,There it can be filtered (过滤)and treated with chemicals so that it can be used again just as if it were fresh from a spring.

But even if every large city purified and reused its water,we sill would not have enough.Where could we turn next? To the oceans! All we'd have to do to make use of the vast amount of sea-water is - remove the salt. This salt- removing process is already in use in many parts of the world.

So if we dtake all these steps,we'll be in no danger of drying up!

41 The phrase"the world"in the first line of the passage refers to

  A  "you".

  B  "man".

  C  "woman".

  D  "they".

42 What percentage of the earth's water can man actually use at present?

A  Less than 3 per cent.

  B  Nearly 75 per cent.

  C  About 97 per cent.

  D  Exactly3 per cent.

43According to the passage we can avoid a worldwide water shortage in the future by

  A  increasing rainfall.

B  cutting down our consumption of water.

C  reusing water and utmzing sea-waterl.

D  reducing the number of factories producing steel.

44 Which of the following starements, according to the passage,is NOT true?

A  A 1imited water supply will affect industrial production.

B  Purified water is not exactly as fresh as spring water.

  A  heating it up.

  B  treating it with chemicals.

  C  drying it up.

D  taking salt out of it.

  Home Schooling

A11children in the United States have to receive an education, but the law does not say they have to be educated at school . A number of parents prefer not to send their children to schoo1.       (46)There are about 300,000 home-schoo1ers in the United States today. Some parents prefer teaching their children at home because they do not believe that public schoo1s teach the correct religious values ; others belive they can provide a better educational experience for their children by teaching them at home             (47)

David Guterson and his wife teach their three children at home . Guterson says that his children learn very difierently from children in school.         (48)For example, when there is heavy snowfall on a winter day, it may start a discussion or reading about climate, snow removal (去除) equipment,A1aska,po1ar bears(北极熊) and winter tourism. A spring evening when the family is out watching the stars is a good time to ask questions about satellites abd the space program        (49)

Home schoo1ing is often more interesting than regular schools, but critics home-schoo1ers are outsiders who might be uncomfortable mixing with other people in adult life       (50)However most parents don't have the time or the desire to teach their children at home,so schoo1s will continue to bewhere most children get their formal education.

A Critics also say that most parents are not well qualified to teach their children.

B Learning starts with the chilren's interests and questions.

C Children who are educated at home are known as "home-schoolers".

D In some countries, however, children are educated by their parents.

E If the Brazilian rain forests are on the TV news,it could be a perfect time to talk about how rain forests influence the climate, and how deserts are formed.

F Interestingly, results show that home-schooled children quite often do better than average on national tests in reading and math.

The Recreative Furiction of Greenspace Facilities

Greenspace facilmes(设施)are contributing to an important extent to the quality of the urban environment.Fortunately it is          (51)longer necessary that every lecture or every book about this subject has to start with the proof of this idea.At present it is        (52)accepted,although more as a self-evident statement        (53)on the basis of a closely-reasoned scientific proof. The recognition of the importance of greenspaces in the urban environment is the     (54)step on the right way;this does not       (55) , however, that sufficient details are known about the functions of greenspace in towns and about the way in which the inhabitants(居民)are using these spaces . As to this rather complex subject I shall, within the        (56) of this lecture, enter into one aspect only, namely the recreative(供消遣的)function of greenspace facilities.

The theoretical separation of       (57),working,traffic and recreation which for many years has been used in town-and-country planning, has in my                (58)resulted in disproportionate (不成比例的)attention for forms of recreation far from home, whereas there was relatively         (59) attention for improvement of recreative possibilities in the direct neighbourhood of the home,We have          (60)to the conclusion that this is not right, because an important part of the time which we do not pass in sleeping or working,is used for         (61)at and around home.So it is obvious that recreation in the open        (62)has to begin at the dstreet-door of the house. The urban environment has to offer as many recreation activities as        (63),and the design of these has to be such that more obligatory(必须做的) activities can also have a recreative aspect.

The very best standard of living is nothing if it is not possible to       (64)a pleasant walk in the district,if the children cannot be allowed to play in the streets because the drisks of traffic are too great,if during shopping you can nowhere          (65) a spot for enjoying for a moment the nice weather,in short if you only feel yourself at home after the street-door of your house is closed after you.
