秀水街形成于1980年，一群有抱负的年轻人在北京秀水东街做起了自己的生意，当时仅有几个极其简陋的摊位。他们做丝绸及外贸服装生意。尽管简陋朴素，秀水街的内在魅力还是掩藏(obscure)不住的。当越来越多的摊贩(vendor)开始售卖中国传统丝绸制品和手工制品，秀水街便因此而得名。北京秀水街，与长城、故宫、烤鸭这些“北京象征”一起，成为很多海内外游客到北京旅游的一个地标。

The Xiushui Street was originated in 1980 when agroup of ambitious youth started their business atSilk Eastern Road, Beijing, with very simple stalls atthat time. They dealt in silk and foreign-tradeapparels. Though simple and crude, the inherentcharms of Xiushui Street could not be obscured. The street got its name when more and morevendors began to sell traditional Chinese silk products and crafts. Beijing Xiushui Street, together with the symbols like the Great Wall, the Imperial Palace, and the Beijing roast duck, become landmarks of Beijing in the eyes of a lot of tourists from home and abroad.
