1、porch /pɔːtʃ/

porch是名词，在英国英语中指屋子入口处的“门廊，门厅”，在美国英语中指屋子外面的“走廊”。

Is there a light in the porch or garden?

门廊或花园里有灯吗?

We'd eat during the hot summer evenings on the front porch.

在炎热的夏夜，我们会在屋前走廊上吃晚饭。

2、portable /ˈpɔːtəbəl/

portable是形容词，意为“轻便的，便携的”。

There was a little portable television switched on behind the bar.

柜台后面有一台开着的便携式小型电视机。

3、porter /ˈpɔːtə/

porter是名词，意为“搬运工，脚夫”，在英国也可指“门房，看门人”。

There aren't any porters, so we'll have to find a trolley for the luggage.

因为没有搬运工，所以我们得找个小车来推行李。

The hotel porter opened the door for me and then called a taxi.

旅馆门厅服务员为我开了门，并帮我叫了一辆计程车。

4、portion /ˈpɔːʃən/

portion是名词，意为“部分”，常用a portion of sth 结构。

The main character's childhood takes up a good portion of the film.

主人公的童年生活占据了电影的很大一部分。

A large portion of the company's profit goes straight back into new projects.

公司利润的一大部分又直接投入了新的专案计划。

5、portrait /ˈpɔːtrɪt/

portrait是名词，意为“人物画像，肖像”，引申为对某事物的“描绘，描述”，后面这个意思使用频率更高。

She's commissioned an artist to paint her portrait.

她委托一位画家为她画一幅肖像。

Her latest novel paints a very vivid portrait of the aristocracy in the 1920s.

6、portray /pɔːˈtreɪ/

portray是动词，意为“描述，描绘”，有时也用portray A as B。

The President likes to portray himself as a friend of working people.

总统喜欢以工薪阶层的朋友自居。

7、pose /pəʊz/

pose作名词我们都很熟悉，就是“姿势”，如拍照时摆pose，这里主要讲解动词的用法。第一，意为“产生，造成”困难，危险等，这个意思很常见，要注意例句中的搭配。

Rising unemployment is posing serious problems for the administration.

失业率上升正在给政府造成严重的问题。

This could pose a threat to jobs in the coal industry.

这可能会给煤炭产业的就业造成威胁。

第二，意为“提出”问题。

The statement posed more questions than it answered.

这份讲话提出的问题多于所回答的问题。

第三，作不及物动词，意为“摆姿势”，引申为“假装，假冒”，这时用pose as sb。

The prime minister posed for photographers.

首相为摄像师们摆好了姿势。

The gang entered the building posing as workmen.

这伙匪徒冒充工人混进了大楼。

8、possess /pəˈzes/

possess是常见的动词，意为“拥有，具有”，基本用于书面语，比have更正式。

He is said to possess a fortune of more than two-and-a-half-thousand million dollars.

据说他拥有超出25亿美元的财富。

I'm afraid he doesn't possess a sense of humour.

恐怕他没有什么幽默感。

9、possession /pəˈzeʃən/

possession很明显是possess的名词形式，possession作不可数名词，意为“拥有，占有”，常用的复数形式possessions意为“所有物，财产”。

The possession of large amounts of money does not ensure happiness.

拥有大量金钱并不能保证一定会幸福。

He had taken possession of one of the sofas.

他已经占有了其中的一个沙发。

People had lost their homes and all their possessions.

人们失去了自己的家园和所有的财物。

10、post /pəʊst/

post是常用词，意思很多，作名词和动词都可以。post作名词时，常见的有以下四种意思。第一，意为“工作，职位”。

We will be creating 15 new posts next year.

明年我们将增设 15 个新职位。

Unfortunately they were unable to find a suitable person to fill the post.

遗憾的是他们一直找不到一个合适的人选填补空缺。
