1、atmosphere /ˈætməsfɪə/

atmosphere为名词，基本含义是“大气，大气层”，引申为“氛围，环境”，常用单数。还可以指某个地方或事件的“情调，魅力”此时是不可数名词。

These factories are releasing toxic gases into the atmosphere. 这些工厂向大气中排放有毒气体。

There's still an atmosphere of great hostility and tension in the city. 强烈的敌对和紧张气氛依然笼罩着这座城市。

The castle was centuries old and full of atmosphere. 那座城堡有数世纪的历史，充满了情调。

2、atom /ˈætəm/

atom是名词，意为“原子”。

A molecule of carbon dioxide has one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms. 二氧化碳分子是由一个碳原子和两个氧原子构成的。

3、attach /əˈtætʃ/

attach是常用动词，主要有以下几个意思，其他意思基本都是第一个意思的引申，很很好理解。

第一，意为“系上，贴上”，常用 attach A to B结构。

I attached a photo to my application form. 我在我的申请表上贴了一张相片。

第二，意为“重视某物，认为某物重要”，常用 attach importance / significance to sth。

People attach too much importance to economic forecasts. 人们把经济预测看得过于重要。

She attaches great value to being financially independent. 她特别看重经济独立。

第三，意为“与…有关联，使…与…有联系“。

No one is suggesting that any health risks attach to this product. 没有人指出这个产品可能会危害健康。

Great honour attaches to winning this award. 获得该奖是莫大的荣誉。

4、attain /əˈteɪn/

attain是动词，通常指经过长时间的努力而“得到，获得”，也可以指“达到”某个水平、地位等。

We need to identify the best ways of attaining our objectives. 我们需要确定达到目标的最佳方法。

More women are attaining positions of power. 越来越多的女性获得要职。

After a year she had attained her ideal weight. 一年后，她达到了理想的体重。

5、attempt /əˈtempt/

attempt意为“尝试，试图”，作名词和动词都可以。注意例句中的attempt的搭配。

In an attempt to diffuse the tension I suggested that we break off for lunch. 为了缓和紧张气氛，我建议我们停下来去吃午饭。

It was one of his rare attempts at humour. 那是他极不常见的想要表现幽默的一次。

They made no attempt to escape. 他们没有企图逃跑。

In this chapter I will attempt to explain what led up to the revolution. 在这一章里，我想解释一下导致革命的原因。

He attempted a joke, but no one laughed. 他开了个玩笑，试图调和气氛，但没有一个人笑。

Weather conditions prevented them from attempting the jump.

6、attend /əˈtend/

attend是个常用动词，它主要有三个意思。

第一，意为“出席，参加”。

The meeting will be attended by finance ministers from many countries. 很多国家的财政部长将出席会议。

We want the maximum number of people to attend to help us cover our costs.我们希望有尽量多的人参加，以帮我们平衡支出。

第二，意为“去学校，上学”等。

7、attendance /əˈtendəns/

attendance是名词，意为“出席，参加”或者“出席人数”。

Most courses involve an average of eight hours attendance at college each week. 多数课程都需要平均每个星期到大学里上 8 小时的课。

There was an attendance of 42 at the meeting. 有 42 人参加了会议。

Attendances at church are falling. 去教堂做礼拜的人越来越少了。

8、attorney /əˈtɜːni/

attorney是名词，在美国指“律师”，lawyer是律师的通称。Attorney General指某些国家的“总检察长”，而在美国指“司法部长”。district attorney指美国的地方检察官，简称DA。这些词再涉及法律方面的外刊中会经常碰到。

9、attribute /əˈtrɪbjuːt/

attribute作名词时，意为“特性，特质，属性”。

Cruelty is a normal attribute of human behaviour. 残忍是人的天性之一。

Flexibility and mobility are the key attributes of Britain's army. 灵活机动是英国军队的主要特点。

attribute也可作动词，常用attribute A to B结构，意为“将A归因于B，认为B有A这种特质”，它的及具体翻译会随着语境有所变化，大家多看几遍例句理解，就很容易掌握它的用法。

He attributed the firm's success to the efforts of the managing director. 他把公司的成就归功于总经理的努力。

10、auction /ˈɔːkʃən/

auction意为“拍卖”，作名词和动词都可以。

They're holding an auction of jewellery on Thursday. 他们将在周四举行一场珠宝拍卖会。
